I don't leave companions on auto because they have wacky builds, generally caster companions need spellpen feats, precise shot and possibly school focus on whatever they're casting, and the martial classes can just be manually levelled with suggested feats as long as you read what they do, for example I kept Lann as pure Zen archer but he gets some free feats from his subclass and it's a good idea to not waste your normal feats on that, also some feats like manyshot / rapidshot don't work for his subclass. Just be careful with too many melees in the team due to pathing issues or play turn based. If you don't play on a high difficulty, you also don't have to worry of every enemy having 80 AC and being impossible to hit. I ended up having Regill as a fighter (armiger), Trever as a fighter (2-handed), Seelah as a fighter (tower shield specialist), Camellia as a fighter with rogue dip, Wenduag as a fighter with 1 level in freebooter and vivi. Also probably the only class that doesn't feel crap wearing armor. I agree fighter is quite good, pick all the weapon feats, crit, penetration etc. Reddit's Rules of Order The entirety of the rules of Reddit still apply here.
